Brian Booth State Park Offers Some Great Kayaking
Kayaking is a wonderful way to experience the peaceful serenity of the Oregon Coast while taking in the views from an entirely different vantage point. It’s also a great way to get up close and personal with coastal wildlife and our natural habitats. And, of course, one of our favorite reasons to encourage kayaking near Newport Oregon this summer is that it’s an activity that involves some natural social distancing. With the COVID-19 pandemic still in our midst, it’s important to find ways to get outside and enjoy restorative time both in nature and away from home, while still respecting social distancing and health guidelines.
If you’re looking to do a little bit of paddling while you’re on vacation this summer, our Bed and Breakfast is a great choice. There are a number of wonderful opportunities for kayaking near Newport Oregon, including the Beaver Creek State Natural Area, which is part of Brian Booth State Park.
Brian Booth State Park is actually made of two distinct areas: Ona Beach State Park, and Beaver Creek State Natural Area. While the Ona Beach Day-Use area is also a delightful place to spend a day, it’s Beaver Creek State Natural Area that we really love, especially for activities like kayaking. It’s just a few miles from the ocean but offers a rich habitat and plentiful wildlife.
Kayaking through this portion of Brian Booth State Park will offer plenty of chances to see Heron, osprey, river otter, and beaver sightings, especially if you’re quiet. There are also a number of smaller side channels you can travel down, which offer the chance to see even more wildlife like red-winged blackbirds and finches that populate the area.
The flow of current in the creek is pretty slow and gentle, and thus pretty easy for paddling in all directions. Upstream is where you’ll find the wildlife-filled riparian habitat. Paddle downstream, and you’ll find yourself heading to the ocean. This protected area is an important component of the Beaver Creek watershed, and the connection between old-growth forests, coastal areas, and marsh habitats makes for a truly delightful afternoon in the Newport Oregon area.
