If you’re looking for relatively easy hiking trails near Newport, you’re in luck. There are several options. Of course, you can always hike along the beaches. Just in front of our Inn is Agate Beach, and from here you can walk to downtown Newport and the historic Nye Beach. The Yaquina Head Natural Area is also a delightful place to hike. It’s home to the Yaquina Head Lighthouse, a destination worthy of your time itself. But there also a number of short hiking trails and walks that allow you to traverse the entire headland. It’s free to walk or bike in, but there is a $7 fee for cars. It’s the perfect way to spend a summer day on the Oregon Coast.
Mike Miller Park is also a great place to go if you’re looking to do some hiking near Newport. There’s a 1-mile loop trail that takes you through a variety of habitats, including an old spruce/fir forest and freshwater wetlands. There are also now a number of connecting trails that lead from this park. South Beach State Park also has a great network of hiking trails. Cooper Ridge Nature Trail is one of the best. It’s a 1.75-mile loop through forest and meadow habitats. The South Jetty Trail is a paved ADA-accessible path that will lead you 1-mile to the South Jetty recreation area. Beaver Creek State Natural Area is also a great place to explore and has a variety of upland meadows and trails. Elk are frequently spotted here, but other potential wildlife sightings include bears, raptors, deer, and river otters.
